Italian Americans and Mass Media: From Print Media Through the Airways to the Internet
The purpose of this unit of study is to explore the evolution of the Italian American community and the process of assimilation/acculturation as reflected in the technological development of modern mass media. We will examine Italian American culture from the pages of print media, through the airways of radio and television, to the clouds of the world wide web and the internet. One of the major goals of this study is to introduce students to the wealth of information about Italian American history and culture that today is so readily available in our world of the personal computer and handheld technologies. One of the key outcomes here is to consider the extent to which the predicted total assimilation and loss of Italian heritage in America has been stymied by advanced technological mass media that allows us to reconnect and replug – to google, screen shot, email, facebook, instagram, twitter, skype, etc. – with our long lost cousins from the Old Country.
